Doing a 15 to 20 minute Carrenza can be a good cardio workout, as well as letting you get creative and spontaneous, or just working your fav moves and experimenting with others. Shaved a few secs due to people walking in to get wipes, kettlebells, etc. Plus, it’s fun!

I get out of the house and went into my own world, my own head, for about an hour. This is a practice I do to prevent utter dullness of mind when I find myself a little too sedentary and occupied with the cares of the world. Sometimes it’s not even martial, it’s mystical, it’s like a vacation! With social isolation for the past year almost, I should be doing more of this. Sometimes the music in my earbuds is Chill and new age, sometimes an old school Jimi Hendrix playlist. Either way, I end up refreshed.
Another year older, a new one just begun.

Weapons play
I’ve been spending more time on empty hand Kuntao Silat training and practice and have stepped back my weapons practice. This day I added a few minutes with our toys.
Back to training, sometimes life gets in the way.
Well we’re back to training.
I’ve been working for Habitat so I’ve been inconsistent. Some of you have been away or occupied with life events and duties, but looks like we’re all settling in so we can start training together again. I’ll be regular at Black Lightning unless I post differently on Facebook, and we have a Sunday morning group meeting in Campbell Park with Guru Aldon leading.
Let’s do our thing and have some fun.
Kali Silat Dance Of Life
I may not be as fast and agile as my instructors or even a lot of my peers, but I still do the Kali Silat Dance Of Life.
It is my own, never the same as the one done before, and I always enjoy learning from the dance.
KARATE!
Doing some Karate Style movement in a gi.
I don’t move like this much anymore and it made different parts of my body sore. At my best, I combine some Karate, Kickboxing, Kali & Silat movement in my carrenza or kembangan, or call it freeform kata! It doesn’t often look like the classical or indigenous manner of movement. After a flowery motion I might jump spin crescent kick into a 1-2/round kick combo, then into a lankha/juru.
Yep, it’s a westernization of eastern concepts, but the east can take that and reclaim it back. After all, some of the martial art boxes are artificial and more nationalist that humanist, therefore they can be expanded.
Hitting.
Sometimes (often) my training and workout is not a fancy, gi clad, fine motor skill, super balanced exercise. Sometimes it’s just about getting in some hitting. Being non violent I don’t want to hit people unnecessarily, but it you’re a martial artist you must hit. I don’t do kickboxing for sport much but I do like the bag work involved in the training.
Ok. Can’t resist this one about home self defense.

- It’s not athletic or fitness based. Fitness is important, you may need to outrun an attacker. I don’t run a killer conditioning class. You won’t have the luxury of a warmup and stretching during an assault or ambush, you’ll need to act as you are with what you have. It’s geared to the average person, it’s a thinking person’s martial arts training.
- Time: 10AM Saturday Mornings. But call to confirm before coming, sometimes we train off location, outdoors, sometimes we reschedule.

Kick & Sticks
It’s really hard to add advanced kicks in flow while doing Kali, and probably impractical. The sticks or blades wiz by a lot faster than your legs can. I’ve sparred with someone who wanted to add high kicks and you end up whacking their legs. So if I have two sticks in hand I probably won’t bother high kicking. But I like the challenge of seeing where and when they can come in, and adds dimension to the carrenza.
